The Wild Wisdom of Weeds
A book recommendation from PI Ambassador, Gretchen Meyer:
Combining the wonders of synchronicity and believing that the right book comes at a time when you are ready to read it, that is exactly what happened when I was ready to read The Wild Wisdom of Weeds by Katrina Blair. Her book of wisdom about 13 essential plants for human survival was so moving that it reawakened a deeper layer of consciousness that I had not experienced since I was a young lass.

During her youngster years, Katrina experienced an insightful “aha” moment while paddling around on Haviland Lake in the San Juan Mountains outside of Durango, Colorado. The plants on the far shore beckoned her. Along with the surrounding environment, the plants gave her a strong message saying “You are home” and “You are going to live your life with us.” Plants became Katrina’s passion and continued communicating with her. For example, when asked how she picked the plants featured in The Wild Wisdom of Weeds, Katrina said they chose her because throughout her life travels she noticed the same wild 13 growing in all parts of the world. And rather than keeping her knowledge under wraps, she has written a book that illuminates her passion for wild edibles and explains why these 13 plants are essential allies to our well-being. Katrina’s message to celebrate the connection between personal health and wild lands continues to be her life’s calling, as clearly reflected by the locally grown, wild harvest and living foods lunch at the Turtle Lake Refuge Cafe as well as creative and cost effective organic lawn projects to reduce the use of herbicides. One such project was the Dandelion Brigade, which was comprised of the Turtle’s crew dressed in yellow and green. After digging up dandelions at a client’s lawn, the colorful brigade would then use a bicycle blender to make dandelion lemonade to share with one another and the client.
